What Is Tree Planting? And Why Do You Need It?

Planting a tree sounds simple. In practice, there are dozens of decisions that determine whether a tree thrives, struggles, or dies within its first few years like species selection for your soil type, sun exposure, and available space; planting depth and backfill technique; proper staking and mulching; and early-life watering regimes.

At FourCorner Landscaping, our tree planting service handles all of these decisions correctly. We select species proven to perform in the DFW climate, install them at the right depth with the right technique, and set them up for long-term success from day one.

We plant trees as standalone landscape features, as part of broader landscape design projects, and as replacements for removed or failed trees, serving residential and commercial properties across The Colony and the wider DFW area.

Why FourCorner Landscaping?

Species Matched to Your Site

The most common reason trees fail after planting is the wrong species in the wrong location. We match tree selection to your specific soil type, drainage, available space, sun exposure, and long-term goals, so what we plant has every reason to thrive.

Planted Correctly, First Time

Planting too deep is the number one cause of tree death after installation. We plant at the correct depth, with the root flare at or above grade, using correct backfill technique, because the first year underground determines the next twenty.

Long-Term Value Addition

Mature trees add significant appraised value to residential properties and provide measurable energy savings through shading of structures. The return on a correctly selected and planted tree compounds over decades.

Local Climate Expertise

We know which trees perform in the DFW heat, which ones tolerate The Colony’s clay soils, and which ones look great in North Texas landscapes year-round. Our recommendations come from direct regional experience, not nursery catalogue descriptions.

Our Step-by-Step Tree Planting Process

What separates a professional tree planting job from a rushed one is preparation. Here’s exactly what we do.

Site Assessment and Species Selection

We visit your property, assess soil drainage, sun exposure, proximity to structures, underground utilities, and available space, then recommend species best suited to the location and your goals.

We always check for overhead and underground utility conflicts before recommending placement.

Sourcing and Delivery

We source quality trees from regional nurseries, preferring locally grown stock that is already acclimated to the DFW climate. We inspect trees for health, root structure, and form before purchase.

Planting Hole Preparation

The planting hole is dug to the correct width (2–3 times the root ball) and depth (root flare at grade). We avoid over-amending backfill soil in a way that discourages roots from extending into native soil.

Installation and Staking

The tree is planted at correct depth, backfilled carefully, and gently firmed to eliminate air pockets. Staking is used only where genuinely needed. Excessive staking inhibits trunk development and is removed after the first growing season

Mulch Ring and Initial Watering

A 3-inch mulch ring (kept away from the trunk) is installed to retain moisture. We provide a detailed watering program for the establishment period and advise on signs of stress to watch for.

Common Questions About Tree Planting

Have a question we haven’t answered? Call us at (469) 464-8115 and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Top performers in the DFW climate include Live Oak, Cedar Elm, Bur Oak, Mexican Plum, Texas Redbud, Bald Cypress (in wetter areas), Lacebark Elm, and Chinquapin Oak. Ornamental options include Crape Myrtle, Desert Willow, and Mexican Buckeye. We recommend specific species based on your site conditions.

This depends on the mature canopy spread and root characteristics of the species. As a general rule, small trees should be planted at least 10 feet from structures; medium trees 15–20 feet; large canopy trees 20–30 feet or more. We assess this during the site consultation.

Fall (October–November) is the best window for most trees in North Texas. The moderate temperatures and winter rainfall support root establishment before summer heat arrives. Spring planting (February–March) is the second-best option. We advise against planting during peak summer heat.

Most trees require 1–3 years of attentive watering and care to become fully established in a new site. The first year is the most critical as adequate water during dry periods is essential. We provide a specific establishment watering guide for every tree we plant.

Yes. We can source and plant larger caliper trees for immediate landscape impact. These require more careful handling during installation and more attentive establishment care, but can transform a property’s appearance immediately. Larger specimens are priced accordingly.
